Watching Salt proved quite a few things in my mind about Angelina Jolie; this film has transcended her into the path anon of action heroes with the likes of Daniel Craig and Bruce Willis in my book. A very exclusive club in Hollywood where entrance can only be attained by having one scene in your film where you dispose of more than 10 men with a submachine-gun, and have the audience not only buy it, but totally cheer you on as well.

Angelina Jolie once again proves that she can walk a tight rope of vulnerability, sensuality, kick-ass determination and still not fall into the same trap of being the femme fatale that many actresses have fallen into and never escaped.

The story of Salt, like any good action film is a very simple one; a Russian walks into CIA headquarters claiming Salt is a Russian super-spy on the night of her wedding anniversary, when all she wants is to get home and have dinner with her husband.  The Russian then goes on to explain Salt has been deep undercover in the US since she was a small child, and was part of a top secret Russian program where US citizens exchanged for Russians to lie in wait for Day X. Which is when all the sleeping agents would re-activate and they would restore Mother Russia to all her glory.

Salt must not only prove that she is not a spy but save her very non-spy husband; in a great role reversal where the male is the weakness and vulnerability to the female super spy. Definitely not what we are use to in a espionage film and somewhat refreshing to tell you the truth.

This film is quite honestly the best straight up action film I have seen in quite a while, they keep plot and details light with just enough character development to keep you invested in the characters throughout the film. The film is directed by Phillip Noyce who previously worked with Jolie on The Bone Collector and written by Kurt Wimmer who also directed Equilibrium and Utraviolet as well. Not only does this team know how to do some great action scenes but they also know how to properly use a strong female protagonist as well. The film is only 90 mins and for an action film that is the gold standard.

I loved Salt, and if this does well it could definitely be the female version of James Bond. And that wouldn’t be such a bad thing considering with MGM’s financial issues have indefinitely delayed a new Bond film. This is definitely a great date movie, ultra-violence for him, a kick ass lead that does not have to rely solely on her sexuality for her; and one of the most pleasant surprises of the summer for me.

Salt is a cold war thrill ride full of off the wall action, great stunts and make me wonder who really would win in a fight between Angelina Jolie and Bruce Willis. I would definitely have to give Salt a 4 out of 5 stars on the Geek-o-meter this is definitely a summer film not to be missed.
