James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, hits theaters Friday, December 8th and in anticipation for that momentous occasion A24 is holding a special screening of the film that started it all Tommy Wiseau’s so-bad-its-good classic The Room (2003) this Thursday, November 9 at 7:30pm. Those that attend this interactive screening will get passes to see The Disaster Artistearly Wednesday, November 15 at 7:30pm at the Ritz East, but you must attend The Room to get those passes.
For those not in the know, The Room is the story of Johnny (Wiseau) a successful banker who is about to marry Lisa (Juliette Danielle) who just happens to be cheating on him with his best friend Mark (Greg Sestero). It’s a strange film that was written, directed, paid for and stars the eccentric Wiseau who meant for the film to be his calling card.
Filled with cheesy love ballads, strange dialog and some of the most awkward sex scenes committed to film, The Room is a film the demands to be experienced on its own terms. See, the thing that makes this film work is you can tell Wiseau in his heart believed he was making the best film he could and I think that enables the film to transcend its limitations.
